Irwin Abraham, MD, FACP, is a sports medicine physician in New York City who specializes in the diagnosis and non-surgical treatments of lower back pain, shoulder problems, and other chronic physical ailments of tendons, ligaments, and around the joints. He provides a wide range of treatments to patients at his practice in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Dr. Abraham was raised in Chicago, Illinois, and attended the University of Chicago for his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry. Subsequently, he attended the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. He completed his residency training at Lincoln Hospital in New York City, where he served as chief resident during his last year.
Afterward, Dr. Abraham relocated to Rochester, New York, and practiced internal medicine in private practice until 2005. Concurrently, he was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry from 1980-2005. In 1978, Dr. Abraham took a week-long course in Rochester with Dr. James Cyriax, one of the originators of orthopedic medicine. In 2005, Dr. Abraham moved his practice to New York City and began to practice exclusively in sports medicine and orthopedic medicine.
He has educated 35 separate physical therapy groups in the New York City area about effective strategies to treat chronic low back pain. Dr. Abraham works within an integrated model of specific diagnoses, body posture, pain, position, and movement. He has authored an important paper on the diagnosis of chronic low back pain and been published in several medical journals.
Dr. Abraham is a member of the American College of Physicians, American Society for Clinical Hypnosis, and Medical Society of the State of New York.
He currently resides in New York with his wife, Dr. Lisa Handwerker, a pediatrician. His biggest passions have been running, cooking, and collecting contemporary ceramic art. Dr. Abraham is passionate about learning new baseball skills and hopes to join a senior league team.
